Preventative Care
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride varnish is a preventative treatment that can help prevent tooth decay, slow it down, or stop it from getting worse. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral present in water and foods, and it can strengthen tooth enamel. Fluoride varnish is formulated in such a way that the mixture solidifies and adheres to the enamel surface for an extended period of time, providing an effective delivery of high contents of fluoride to weakened tooth surfaces.
Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride (APF):
Applied at the end of most of children's regular cleaning visits, APF is another form of fluoride which strengthens the tooth enamel against decay. Fluoride treatments can best help prevent decay when accompanied with adequate brushing, flossing, regular dental care, and eating a healthy diet.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF):
Having been in use in other countries for decades, SDF became available in the US in the recent years as an effective medicament to control tooth decay, especially in children. With multiple applications on the lesions, it may provide a safe, non-invasive way to treat tooth decay without the need to drill and fill.
